In the midst of any chase, conflict, or any other scenario, roll 2d6 if you like, and throw the player(s) a little bit of spicy spicy that might interrupt their next steps, something to challenge their expectations, to make them swivel and pause and reassess. It could be something totally random, or you could try blending in what you roll into what else is going on.
2. Someone, a crowd, a creature, or a sudden herd of bolting animals, either unrelated or with an interest, steals attention.
3. A hazard or trap creates an impediment...falling, opening, breaking, clouding, burning, getting in the way.
4. Malfunction or snap of machinery, gear, weapons, or armour, from strain, movement, age, or skulduggery.
5. Divine rift or supernatural occurrence. Previously unseen, lying dormant, now disturbed, with all in the area affected.
6. An environmental impact disturbs the location. Sudden weather, fire, ice, landslide, sinkhole, swarm, flood, radiation.
7. Haunting voice, or disembodied utterance, surprises or shocks, offering insight, distraction, or a threat.
8. Arcane nullity or spark, curse, or glitch corrupts normality, generating some confusion, peril, or complexity.
9. Sudden intense noise, like a horn, alarm, roar, hiss, or boom reverberates and commands the spotlight.
10. Low or reversed gravity or oxygen or gas, invoked abruptly by accident, malfunction, timer, or trigger.
11. Divisive challenge or threat, prompting an urgent need to decide who to save, follow, believe, or take sides with.
12. Roll another 1d6. The player(s) can then introduce something cool & unexpected that occurs that might help the characters on a 4 or above, or that might hinder them on a 3 or below, your discretion as GM being final.
