Since your character stumbled from their failed career, maybe even with a tinge of hope for the future, well, it’s not gone totally to plan, has it? Roll 3d6 to see what’s gone wrong lately, or choose or make up your own, fleshing it out.
3. Robbed. How did that happen? How much was lost?
4. Cheated. By a lover? Gambler? Trader?
5. Got Lost. Ended up here, but where were you headed?
6. Beaten Up. Because of something you said, maybe?
7. Lost Faith. But what in? Religion? Family? Justice?
8. Mixed Up. In someone else’s problem? In a cult / gang?
9. Fouled Up. That last job, how did you mess it up again?
10. On The Run. From your emotions? From someone?
11. Loose Tongue. What did you blab, and to whom?
12. Your Fault. Ruin someone, or something, by accident?
13. Lost Stash. Why can’t you remember where it is?
14. Contagious. Got an irksome infection or infliction?
15. Joyous. How did your happiness get on someone’s nerves?
16. Weathered. What happened during that storm?
17. Ill Repute. What, an entire town hates you? Why?
18. Broken. Heart? Prized heirloom? What happened?
No need to go into too much detail. Just note down on your sheet what’s gone wrong for your character recently, and how that might be affecting their mood yes, but mainly their motivation, what they’d like to do next, maybe to drive out their memory of it all, or to begin to make amends. Also, feel free to add one person they met who became a mentor to them, set them on the path to get good at their ...thing. Try to have this in mind when your character’s chatting with others in-game.
