Rules of the Chaos | Creatures' Turns

Creatures’ success during turns

You don’t need to state intentions for any creatures or NPCs in fights or chases, but it can be helpful to roll for grit & have a plan in mind. If you as GM win initiative, each creature or NPC in the scene takes a turn by rolling their 1d6 ± any modifiers. If they attack or weave a spell and succeed by rolling 4 or above, their target will take the damage & any effect from this minus any armour modifier. Unless a creature or NPC is engaged in melee with an enemy during a fight and wishes to dodge & parry (see new paths) or to do something hard, no roll is needed if the creature or NPC is just moving on their turn.

Creatures’ failure during turns

If a creature or NPC fails on an attack against a character, by rolling under a 4, it’s like the creature has missed and taken a hit from that character, the damage being based on that character’s stated intention for that round. For example, if the character had stated they wanted to attack with a certain weapon in this round, they’ll have that to hand and so the damage taken by the creature or NPC will be based on that weapon. If it was a spell, roll that up and see what happens! If the character’s stated intention had just been to move for that round, the damage taken will be based on the character’s usual weapon or a randomly woven spell, your discretion being final. If the creature or NPC unsuccessfully targeted more than one character, or a character who’d have no chance of striking back, the damage they take might depend on which of the characters is nearest or has the highest agility, with the player(s) deciding, in the event of a tie, whose character’s damage should be applied, the GM’s discretion being final.
